Recently Saratov State Socio-Economic University has become one of the largest educational and scientific centres of the country. More than 50,000 highly qualified specialists have graduated from the University and work in different industries now.
University training encompasses scientific and applied research as well as active participation in major social and economic projects of Saratov Region.
Saratov State Socio-Economic University is an education and scientific structure where modern technologies are widely used. University funds are steadily rising. Saratov State Socio-Economic University (SSSEU)
Saratov State Socio-Economic University is one of the oldest and at the same time one of the universities which develops dynamically. For the past 75 years the University has established itself as one of the leading research institutions in the humanities.
The history of the University began in 1931 when Institute of Finance and Institute of Economics were founded in Saratov. 15 years later they merged into Economic Institute. In 1994 Economic Institute was restructured and got the name of Academy of Economics. In January 1999 this institution of higher education gained the university status.
Now Saratov State Socio-Economic University comprises 8 Faculties, 35 Departments, 6 Branches, College of Economics, Lyceum of Economics, Computer centre, the Library, the Publishing Centre, the Virtual World of the Russian Museum (St Petersburg) Centre, Institute of Continuing Learning, Institute of Distance Learning. Disciplinary approaches at all University divisions coexist with interdisciplinary ones to provide a varied and rich context for studying subjects that are focused on humanities and social sciences as well.
The University is constantly improving the academic process and is trying to implement a ‘life-long learning’ approach. There are opportunities to enhance students’ skills through access to computing, information technology and research skills training. The University houses the following centres: Centre for Management and Personnel Training, Centre for Interpreter Training in the Field of Professional Communication, Centre for Professional Accountant and Auditor Training, Regional Japanese Centre, Local Committee of AIESEC.
Saratov State Socio-Economic University provides an opportunity of getting higher education in 38 specialties, secondary and vocational education in 5 specialties. There are also three Bachelor, one Master programme and seven Continuing Learning programmes. Post-diploma education is available in 13 different specialties at the University.
The total number of students getting higher, secondary-vocational training is 7,000; 5,300 being full-time and 1,700 - part-time students.

The qualified academic staff, the “best treasure” of Saratov State Socio-Economic University, provides high quality education. 87 PhDs, DScs in different sciences, Professors and 383 Associate Professors work at the University. Among the academic staff there are two Honoured Scholars of Science of the Russian Federation, eight Honoured Scholars of Higher School, one Laureate of the Premium of the President of the Russian Federation. The academic staff with different kinds of scientific degrees makes up 91.1%; with Doctorate degree being 73.3%.
The University has developed and is implementing the integrity system providing high quality of education. It includes new teaching and IT techniques, workshops on methodology, upgrading courses for academic staff as well as the auxiliary personnel, and supervision of young teaching staff. This system enables evaluation of education quality at all stages.
Top and middle managers of different companies and civil servants of the Government of Saratov Region are involved in the academic process as well.
A credit and rating system introduced at the University guarantees deeper and better knowledge of graduates.
An innovative scientific educational complex is functioning successfully at the University. Its main structures are 14 University ‘scientific schools’.
The University has been cooperating with various industrial enterprises, companies and institutions of the region on terms of reciprocity. As the result, up to twenty – thirty contracts are signed by the University annually.
Development of already existing ‘scientific schools’ and formation of the new one – information and telecommunication technologies; cooperation with universities of other countries in innovation projects, fundamental and applied research, academic staff professional development; interaction with local authorities in meeting the demands of the region are of the top priority at the University.
Since 2001, crucial changes have taken place in the sphere of research and scientific activities: the list of specialties has been enlarged, interdisciplinary approach to the pursuit of knowledge has been found in different fields of science, competitiveness in both academic and scientific work has increased. Innovation techniques are widely used. The University has been publishing up-to-date journals, textbooks, teaching guides produced by its staff. Great attention has been paid to young scholars and their scientific research. Funds invested by the University over the period of 2001-2006 has amounted to 50,000,000 rubles; 10,000,000 being spent on fundamental research.
During this period 107 scientific monographs, 193 textbooks and teaching guides have been published; three patents have been obtained. The University has taken part in 12 exhibitions; four of them being international and eight All-Russian ones. 100 exhibits were displayed. 90 conferences have been held; 17 being international and 73 All-Russia.
The University involves students in scientific work and research and holds various kinds of conferences, competitions and quizzes for them. Students can focus their studies and research on issues within their chosen disciplines. The students published more than 400 articles on the results of their research, took part in 23 students’ research competitions of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation and got 24 medals, diplomas, certificates and premiums for the period of 2001 - 2006.
The University offers post-diploma education in thirteen specialties, six of which were introduced in 2002-2005. Postgraduate students’ body is 478. There are four dissertation councils where Doctoral (DSc) and Candidate (PhD) theses in the following specialties are defended: “History of Russia” (code 07.00.02), “Political Establishment, Ethno Political Conflict Studies, National and Political Processes and Technologies” (code 23.00.02), “Theory of Economics” (code 08.00.01), “Management of National Economy” (code 08.00.05), “Finance, Monetary System and Credit” (code 08.00.10), “Accounting and Statistics” (code 08.00.12), “Economic Sociology and Demography” (code 22.00.03), “Sociology of Management” (code 22.00.08). Since 2001, 494 theses have been defended, 56 of them are Doctoral ones. Postgraduates from Saratov and Saratov region as well as from other regions of Russia and CIS get their post-diploma education at the University.
The University is focusing on continuing learning which provides an ongoing retraining of top managers of regional and city administration, businesses of the Volga region, and academic staff of other higher educational institutions. It offers training programmes in “Web–design”, in accounting and auditing, in financial programme “Banking”, in Presidential programme “Managers of the XXI century”, in training of translators in the sphere of professional activities, in MBA programme, and in programme for specialists in marketing. The overall trainees’ body is 4,500.
Modern IT technologies are widely introduced by the University administration. This approach gives wider access to education and enables both staff and students to achieve a higher quality of it, as these technologies are employed in everyday teaching and extra-curricular activities. Cultural competence is enhanced at the Virtual World the Russian Museum (St Petersburg) Centre with one of the biggest Russian collections of e-files on art and history. Professional competence is enhanced through participating in federal programmes “IT Technologies in Russia”, integral information and education system and personnel retraining.
In July 2004 Saratov State Socio-Economic University, together with 40 universities of Russia gained the status of Microsoft IT Academy. This allows not only to obtain high quality training in Microsoft IT technologies but to get certificate “Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP)” recognized worldwide.
International relations between Saratov State Socio-Economic University and universities of other countries are strengthening and playing an important role in the University activities that contribute to education and research.
The University cooperates with Universities of Wyoming (the USA), North Carolina at Pembroke (the USA), Illinois at Springfield (the USA), Arizona State University East (the USA), University of Salford (Great Britain), University of Saskatchewan and International Business School Columbus (Canada), University Pierre Mendes France (Grenoble, France), University Jean Monnet (Saint Etienne, France), Ternopol Academy of National Economy (Ukraine), Zhitomir State University of Technology (Ukraine), University of Rzeszow (Poland), University of Nitra (Slovakia), State Economic University of Byelorussia, State University and Agro-technical University of West Kazakhstan, Institute of Languages and Management “Eurasia” of West Kazakhstan (Uralsk, Kazakhstan).
Since 1999 the University has been a member of Compostela Group of Universities (Spain). For six years the University has been a member of European Access Network. SSSEU takes an active part in the education programmes of TEMPUS (TACIS), Eurasia Foundation, the British Council, Fulbright, Institute “Open Society” (Soros Foundation), German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Presidential Programme and the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. The University takes part in the Russian-Dutch project “Marketing education in Russia” in collaboration with University INHOLLAND (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and State University of Management (Moscow, Russia).
Due to international cooperation and integration process the necessity of specialists in world economy was realized and new specialties came into existence. Departments of World Economy, International Economic Relations, Theory of Economics, Political Science, Theory of Translation and Crosscultural Communication were organized to train the specialists of the kind. Diplomas of these departments are recognized in Great Britain, France and Germany. More than sixty academic staff members and post-graduate students have taken upgrading courses at foreign universities, and twelve students have successfully graduated from the leading European universities.
Under the agreements with foreign universities fifteen-twenty students go studying abroad yearly. At present five postgraduates of the University are taking courses at the universities of France upon completion of which they will obtain scientific degrees recognized both in France and Russia.
University funds are constantly rising. The Library building, a concert hall and two buildings for administrative and studying needs have been built; leisure facilities are under construction. The territory of the University campus is about 90,000 sq.m. The University has canteens and buffets, health care centre and summer camping facilities.
The University is famous for its traditions of students’ body administration, students’ union with its activities centre which organizes entertainments and social events. 300 students are enrolled in 18 societies. Run entirely by students, these range from sports and social clubs through to performing arts and special interest organizations.
Federal programme “Students’ Health” is to ensure that students have access to a wide range of sport and fitness opportunities and facilities. 400 students are engaged in 17 sport clubs.
The University chess team participates in Russian and European International competitions and tournaments. The team is the Champion of the Russian Federation among students’ teams.

The Lyceum was founded in 1992. More than 600 students have completed their studies since then.
The best students then enter the University and continue their studies taking postgraduate courses afterwards. Now among the former students of the Lyceum there is one Doctoral, twelve Candidate degree holders; fourteen students are taking postgraduate courses.

University Library

The history of the Library goes back to the first days of the University foundation. In the first years the book collection amounted to 200,000 volumes. Today many textbooks and monographs from this collection are bibliographic rarity.
A major extension and refurbishment of the Library was completed in June of 1998. The Library moved to a new building (total area of 2,350 sq.m) with 7 reading halls which house 325 people. The Library is a coordinating methodological centre for 6 libraries at the University branches.
The Library contains about 700,000 volumes, including 200,000 textbooks, 300, 000 volumes of scientific literature, 50,000 fiction work and 3,500 books in foreign languages. Around 15,000 new books are added each year and the Library also subscribes to 200 periodicals.
All the stock is an open access to more than 11,000 readers.
In 2001 much of today’s information became available in electronic form. The Library provides a range of electronic information sources, websites. Nowadays the Library has an electronic catalogue with about 60,000 records.
In 2002 the Library became a member of a special system which enables to receive scientific articles abstracts from more than 1,000 journals. In 2005, an information class was open at the Library. A cluster of networked PC for 21 users provides word-processing, e-mail and other applications. Daily more than 70 people come to these classes and get an access to information electronic resources of the University and the largest libraries of Russia.
Today the Library is the centre of cultural life of the University which attracts writers, actors and artists of Saratov as well as students of the University.
S.V.Kekova, PhD (Linguistics), Associate Professor, a member of the Russian Union of Writers, coordinates the work of the poetic studio “Sirin” sited in the Library.
The Library holds exhibitions of artists - teachers of Saratov educational institutions.

The Virtual World of the Russian Museum (St Petersburg) Centre

The Virtual World of the Russian Museum (St Petersburg) Centre opened its doors in 2004. The Centre is a part of the Russian Museum programme “Russia” aimed at creating the unique integral electronic network to enlighten not only students of the University but all people interested in arts about the collection of the Russian Museum. To achieve the goal, new electronic techniques are being used to make the masterpieces from the collection of the largest art museum available for people. The programme “Russia” is for young generation.
The Centre has an interactive cinema room where you can travel virtually along the halls and paintings of the Russian Museum; education centre where you can find cultural education programmes; information room containing electronic catalogue of the Russian Museum.
The Centre possesses large collections of e-files on art, history and world culture.
Today the Centre has links with the Radishchev Art Gallery and Chernyshevsky Museum, Saratov Union of Artists, Local History Museum, lyceums, gymnasiums, schools and institutions of higher education.
The Centre offers educational programmes: technology of multimedia resources, web-design, computer design and makeup, Adobe Photoshop, CorelDraw, etc. About 200 people were trained at the Centre, over 100 different multimedia lectures, tests and teaching aids were designed.
More than 12,000 people, mostly schoolchildren and students, have visited the Centre since 2004. The museum is free for disabled children.

Computer Centre

The University Computer Centre was founded in 1996.
The last ten years have seen an explosion in the ways in which computers and computer networks are used to aid research and teaching. To meet these growing demands, new information technologies, communications infrastructure, a local computer network (600 PC) were created to provide a wide range of services
The University is a member of different Federal programmes among which is the “IT Technologies in Russia” programme. The Centre provides an access to the Internet.
The Centre is in charge of 15 classrooms equipped with modern PC, 2 lecture halls for 200 seats each, 3 classrooms for multimedia presentations, and a room for simultaneous translation for 75 seats. It also runs induction and taught courses to enable students to acquire additional computer skills.
The Centre contributes much to academic process developing special teaching courses. Additionally, the Centre licences 59 software packages that can be installed on the University computers.

The Centre for Graduates Employment

The Centre for Graduates Employment was founded in 2003. It assists graduates of the University in finding jobs cooperating with numerous employers in different spheres of economy, provides information to both employers and students and graduates. More then 2,500 students have got consultations and practical advice at the centre.
In 2006 together with the Computer Centre the Centre for Graduates Employment developed the programme “Virtual Students’ Recruitment Agency”, thus allowing the University students and graduates to use the database of the federal and regional job vacancies, to search for a job in all regions of the Russian Federation.
The Centre assists in finding part-time jobs for students who can combine work and studies. Search for summer jobs is also available.
The busiest time is April “Career Day”. Beside the Centre the following institutions participate in the event: City Employment Centre, Department of the Federal Employment Service in Saratov region and the Regional Centre for Social Service of Youth “Youth plus”.
The effectiveness of the Centre is proved by the fact that up to 90-95 per cent of the graduates find jobs with its help.

The University Publishing Centre

The University Publishing Centre was founded in 1994. It has modern computer facilities.
The Centre proof-reads, edits and publishes educational, scientific, methodological books. It has published 250 scientific works; 193 textbooks and teaching aids. The total number of published editions is 900 with circulation of 368,000 copies.
Since 2001 the Publishing Centre has been publishing the journal “Bulletin of Saratov State Socio-Economic University”, included by the State Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles of the Russian Federation in the list of periodicals.
For the years running the Publishing Centre has been awarded with the diplomas of the Ministry of Information and Press of Saratov Region for preserving the traditions of publishing educational literature, for the edition “Years and People in the Life of the University”, for the publishing the high quality scientific editions - “Bulletin of Saratov State Socio-Economic University”, “Information Systems in Banking”, “Restaurant Service at the Hotel”, the teaching aid “Economic History of Russia”, and the bibliographic dictionary “Russian Historians of the XX Century”.

The Institute of Continuing Learning

The Institute was founded in 2002. More than 4,500 managers and economists of Saratov Region have been trained at the Institute.
Several times the Institute has been with awarded the prize at the All-Russian contests organized by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of the Russian Federation. In 2002 the Institute was awarded with the I degree Diploma for the teaching set of educational and methodological programmes for governmental officials; in 2003 – with a special diploma for socially significant project “Programme on Upgrading in Economics and Management of Health System”; in 2005 – with the III degree Diploma for working put and implementation of the programme on training and upgrading of civil servants.
The Institute comprises 7 centres offering more than 100 educational programmes.
